A unique 1989 Mazda RX-7 Turbo II with a Corvette LS1 V8 swap is turning heads as part of The Generous Collection, a massive no-reserve auction honoring the late Alabama businessman and car enthusiast Greg Rusk. Hosted through Broad Arrow Auctions, the event features more than 200 vehicles emerging from long-term storage, with bidding on this LS1-powered RX-7 currently reaching $9,750 and ending October 20.

Rusk, known for his generosity and community involvement, amassed his collection over decades, often purchasing cars at premium prices simply to help fellow enthusiasts. Now, his family is opening the doors of that collection, giving each car “a chance to write its next chapter back on the road,” according to auction organizers.

The featured RX-7 began life as a Turbo II, the high-performance variant of Mazda’s second-generation FC3S model. Originally powered by a 1.3-liter 13B turbocharged rotary engine, this example has been transformed with a 5.7-liter LS1 V8 and a matching six-speed manual transmission — both sourced from a Chevrolet Corvette. The result is a potent blend of Japanese engineering and American muscle.

Finished in factory Sunrise Red over black woven cloth, the RX-7 includes ASA two-piece alloy wheels, a MOMO steering wheel, cold-air intake, and twin Racing Beat mufflers. Other highlights include drilled and slotted disc brakes, sport bucket seats, and a power sunroof — though the listing notes that the sunroof and A/C are inoperable. The car also carries a mileage inconsistency on its CARFAX report and shows cosmetic wear consistent with its age.

Despite these issues, its rarity and hybridized performance make it one of the more intriguing offerings in Rusk’s vast collection. Located in Alabama, the RX-7 is available to bidders nationwide but subject to state-specific tax rules.
The Generous Collection’s first phase marks the start of a months-long series of auctions, offering enthusiasts the chance to own part of an extraordinary and heartfelt automotive legacy — one built as much on passion as generosity. See it here.
