Low-Mile 1996 Chevrolet Impala SS Preserves Final-Year Muscle Sedan Legacy

A 1996 Chevrolet Impala SS showing fewer than 38,000 miles is offering a well-preserved look at the final chapter of one of the 1990s’ most recognizable American performance sedans.

Introduced for 1994, the revived Impala SS transformed Chevrolet’s full-size Caprice into a modern muscle car. Designers reshaped the rear wheel openings and quarter glass, added a subtle rear spoiler, fitted a distinctive single-bar grille and finished the car in black with unique badging. Beneath the updated exterior was hardware to match its more aggressive appearance.

Power came from a 5.7-liter LT1 V8 shared with the contemporary Corvette. Factory rated at 260 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque, the engine used sequential fuel injection and was paired with a 4L60E four-speed automatic transmission. An 8.5-inch 10-bolt rear axle with 3.08 gears and limited-slip differential helped channel output to the pavement. Larger 12-inch vented anti-lock disc brakes and 17-inch alloy wheels reinforced the sedan’s performance mission, while suspension components borrowed from the Police Package Caprice, including upgraded springs and stabilizer bars, sharpened handling.

By 1996, the Impala SS had evolved further. The final-year model received a unique analog sport instrument cluster and a center console-mounted floor shifter, details that distinguished it from earlier versions. The combination of V8 power and rear-wheel drive delivered performance capable of quarter-mile runs in the 14-second range, solidifying its reputation as a serious full-size sedan.

This Canadian-market example was reportedly sold new in Alberta and remained there until being registered in Arizona in late 2025. Finished in black over a gray leather interior, it is believed to remain stock. Equipment includes 17x8.5-inch five-spoke alloy wheels now wrapped in 255/50 Nitto NT555 G2 tires, dual exhaust outlets with polished tips, quick-ratio power steering and an optional AM/FM/CD stereo system.

Recent service in December 2025 included a new battery and tire, along with an oil and filter change and detailing. Accompanied by a clean CARFAX history report and owner’s manual, the low-mile 1996 Impala SS stands as a preserved example of Chevrolet’s final B-body muscle sedan. See it here.
