Rare 2004 Ford GT Prototype CP4/007, first to exceed 200 mph, heads to auction as most significant early GT.
One of the most significant Ford GTs ever built will cross the auction block Saturday evening, as the 2004 Ford GT Prototype CP4/007—widely regarded as the most important first-generation GT—comes up for sale.
Known officially as Confirmation Prototype 4, CP4/007 played a central role in proving the GT’s ride, handling, steering, and climate control systems before production began. It is also remembered as the first Ford GT prototype to surpass 200 miles per hour during testing, cementing its place in Ford’s modern performance history.
Built in 2003 during the program’s development phase, CP4/007 carries numerous differences from production models. It features a unique carbon fiber inner clamshell skin—an engineering detail too costly for production, estimated to add $45,000 to the MSRP. Other pre-production touches include black powder-coated supercharger and valve covers, prototype interior trim with a teardrop aluminum shift knob, and Velcro remnants from testing instrumentation. Even its amber front indicator lights set it apart from the eventual road cars.
CP4/007 also bears the signatures of all 15 engineers who developed the GT program, further underscoring its importance as a piece of Ford’s performance legacy. Unlike many prototypes that were destroyed after testing, this example was preserved and has since passed through just three careful owners.
The car has been serviced by a Ford Master GT Technician, with updates including a new clutch, rewired electrical system, functional air conditioning, and Ford Racing exhaust. Remarkably, it carries a legal title, is road-registered, and is not restricted to the 15-mph speed limit often imposed on prototype vehicles, making it a usable and roadworthy collector’s item.
As one of only four prototypes believed to remain in existence—and the only one titled for the road—CP4/007 represents an irreplaceable bridge between Ford’s GT40 heritage and its modern Le Mans-winning GT program.
