A 1995 Lotus Esprit S4 Sport once owned by acclaimed author Cormac McCarthy is drawing attention as it heads to auction, offering a blend of literary history and performance car pedigree. The vehicle is currently listed on Hagerty Marketplace, where bidding is expected to intensify as the auction deadline approaches.
McCarthy, known for a body of work that includes novels, screenplays, and plays, maintained a strong interest in automobiles throughout his life. Although his literary success came later in his career, he developed a notable collection of vehicles over time, ranging from high-performance sports cars to rare models. His fascination with cars reflected a broader curiosity about the world beyond writing.
The Lotus Esprit now up for sale represents a later evolution of one of the British brand’s most recognizable designs. Finished in gloss black, the car features the Esprit’s signature wedge-shaped body and a gray leather interior. Under normal conditions, the model is powered by a 2.2-liter turbocharged inline-four engine producing 301 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque. When new, the car was capable of accelerating from zero to 60 miles per hour in under five seconds and reaching a top speed of 168 miles per hour.
Despite its performance credentials, this particular example is being offered as a project car. It has never been registered or titled and is not currently in running condition, presenting a restoration opportunity for prospective buyers. The vehicle is being sold by McCarthy’s younger brother, who has indicated interest in finding a buyer willing to undertake the work required to bring it back to life.
