1968 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS 396 Tribute Draws Bids in Florida Auction

A 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu transformed into an SS 396 tribute is attracting attention in an online auction out of Clearwater, Florida. The car, offered by PJ’s Auto World, has reached a high bid of $6,800 with 12 days remaining and 13 bids recorded so far.

The Chevelle represents Chevrolet’s redesigned second-generation A-body, introduced in 1968 with sweeping fastback-inspired styling and a shorter 112-inch wheelbase. The updated frame and coil-spring suspension helped position the model as both a capable performer and a comfortable cruiser. Originally built as a V8-powered Malibu Sport Coupe at Chevrolet’s Atlanta, Georgia, assembly plant, this example now wears visual and mechanical upgrades inspired by the high-performance SS 396 variant.

Under the hood sits a 396-cubic-inch Chevrolet big-block V8 fitted with a four-barrel Holley carburetor. The engine block carries a #3855961 stamping and is paired with a three-speed TH-350 automatic transmission with a floor shifter. Performance-oriented additions include headers, a dual exhaust system with chrome tips, upgraded spark plug wires and an aluminum radiator. Front disc brakes and power steering have been added to complement the increased power output.

The exterior has been refinished in black and features SS 396 styling cues, including a twin-domed hood, black grille and rear panel, and appropriate badging. A black vinyl top tops the two-door Sport Coupe, while 15-inch Rally wheels wearing BF Goodrich tires complete the period look.

Inside, the red interior includes bucket seats and SS 396 trim. Instrumentation upgrades consist of a steering column-mounted tachometer and under-dash gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature and voltage. A modern stereo mounted in the stock location and rear-deck speakers provide updated audio capability.

Showing 36,700 miles indicated, noted as true mileage unknown, the Chevelle is offered with keys, a spare tire and a clean Florida title, as part of a limited February auction release from PJ’s Auto World. See it here.
