Ultra-Low-Mileage 1987 Chevrolet El Camino “Choo Choo” Emerges Ahead of January Auction

A remarkably preserved 1987 Chevrolet El Camino Choo Choo Conversion is set to attract attention when it crosses the Mecum auction block in January. With only 6,536 miles indicated, the vehicle represents one of the most original surviving examples from the final year of El Camino production and one of the lowest-mileage Choo Choo models to surface publicly.

The Choo Choo Conversion program began in the middle of the 1983 model year, when Chevrolet partnered with Choo Choo Customs of Chattanooga, Tennessee, to give the long-running coupe-utility a more performance-inspired image. The factory-built El Camino SS had ended, but Chevrolet still wanted a standout version in its showrooms. Through this arrangement, new El Caminos were shipped to Choo Choo Customs for final assembly, then sold directly through dealerships with full warranties.

The package focused strictly on appearance rather than performance. Choo Choo Customs added a Monte Carlo SS-style aerodynamic nose with unique parking light lenses, distinctive SS graphics, and the signature chrome train emblem on the dashboard. Most mechanical components remained untouched, though a variety of interior and exterior trim variations appeared throughout the run. Special editions, including Designer Series and IROC-S models, added more visual flair.

Roughly 4,950 Choo Choo El Caminos were produced from 1983 through 1987, making them far less common than standard G-body models. Their blend of factory backing and third-party customization has since given them a niche following. Surviving examples that retain their original graphics and components have gained slow but steady recognition at G-body and classic truck events, contributing to rising values in recent years.

The 1987 model headed to auction stands out for its originality and condition. Finished in white with black graphics, it rides on correct alloy wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires. Power comes from a 305-cubic-inch V8 paired with an automatic transmission. The blue interior remains consistent with period specifications, featuring power accessories, air conditioning, bucket seats, and a center console. Even the cargo area presents as well kept, reinforcing its low-use history.

As interest in distinctive 1980s specialty models continues to grow, this exceptionally preserved Choo Choo Conversion is positioned to draw strong bidding when it appears at Mecum in January.
