Porsche has revealed a one-of-a-kind 911 S/T created through its Sonderwunsch customization program, drawing inspiration from a little-known but historically significant Camel GT race car from the 1970s.
The bespoke model reimagines a competition-driven 911 originally campaigned during the Camel GT Challenge, blending period design cues with the performance capabilities of Porsche’s modern 992-generation platform. Rather than replicating the vintage race car outright, the project focuses on reinterpretation, incorporating heritage elements in a more refined and contemporary presentation.
The original race car that inspired the build was developed from an early production 911 ST acquired by a Canadian racing team. It was later modified for endurance competition, including the addition of wider rear tires to improve grip during long-distance events. The car became recognizable for its Phoenix Red paint scheme and competed extensively throughout the 1970s before its racing career ended following an accident in Canada. Despite that setback, the vehicle was preserved and passed through various collectors over the years.
The newly unveiled 911 S/T reflects that history through carefully selected design details. Its exterior features a hand-painted Phoenix Red finish accented by Signal Yellow, referencing the original car’s factory color. Inside, the cabin incorporates subtle nods to its racing heritage, including embroidered camel imagery on the seats and etched trim elements. Track outlines representing circuits where the original car competed are also integrated into the interior design.
While the aesthetics pay tribute to the past, the mechanical components remain unchanged from the modern 911 S/T. The car is powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine producing 518 horsepower and 343 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. Though road-legal, the vehicle can be adapted for track use with specialized aerodynamic components.
Commissioned by the current owner of the historic race car, the project underscores Porsche’s continued focus on blending heritage with customization. Pricing has not been disclosed, though the level of detail and exclusivity suggests a significant investment.
