A rare piece of automotive history has reemerged with the availability of the 1959 Asardo 1500 AR-S, a one-of-one sports car that reflects an ambitious blend of European design and American engineering from the late 1950s.

Built in New Jersey by Austrian engineer Helmut Schlosser, the Asardo was conceived as a lightweight performance car during an era defined by hand-crafted experimentation and innovation. Constructed on a tubular chassis and clothed in a fiberglass body, the coupe stands out for its distinctive proportions and design cues drawn from some of Europe’s most celebrated sports cars of the time.
The car’s styling features gullwing doors, a rare and eye-catching element inspired by the Mercedes-Benz 300SL. Its overall silhouette carries similarities to models from Ferrari’s 250 series and the Maserati 300S, while maintaining a unique identity shaped by its one-off status. The combination of European aesthetics with American-based construction highlights the cross-continental vision behind the project.

Power for the Asardo originally came from an Alfa Romeo Giulietta-derived twin-cam four-cylinder engine, known for its high-revving performance and compatibility with the car’s lightweight structure. The vehicle saw limited competition use in Sports Car Club of America events during its early years, underscoring its performance ambitions. At one point in its history, the car was modified to accommodate an American V8 engine before eventually being returned to its original four-cylinder configuration.
The Asardo made its public debut at the 1959 New York Auto Show, where it was intended to preview a potential production run. However, financial challenges prevented the project from moving forward, leaving this single example as the only one ever completed.

Finished in white with a red leather interior featuring bucket seats, the coupe remains a striking representation of late-1950s craftsmanship. Today, it stands as a rare artifact from a period when independent builders pursued bold ideas, resulting in a unique intersection of racing aspiration and coachbuilt design. See it here.
