Toyota’s decision to move the latest Tacoma generation from a V6 to inline-four powertrains has done little to slow the midsize pickup’s dominance in the U.S. market. The Tacoma remains America’s best-selling midsize truck, with Toyota Motor North America selling nearly 275,000 units last year, a more than 42% increase over the previous year. By comparison, Chevrolet delivered about 107,000 Colorados, while Nissan sold roughly 65,000 Frontiers.
While the Tacoma lineup offers seven trim levels, aftermarket customization continues to play a major role for owners seeking a more personalized look and capability. One standout example comes from MJ Motorsports in Waipahu, Hawaii, where a Blue Crush Metallic Tacoma SR5 has undergone a series of visual and performance-focused upgrades.
Originally an entry-level SR5 — the second of seven available grades — the truck has evolved through three modification phases. Early changes included a set of 17-by-8.5-inch Double Black Method Racing Wheels 305s with a +25 offset, wrapped in 295/70R17 Mickey Thompson Baja Boss all-terrain tires. A three-inch Eibach Stage 2 lift kit provides additional ground clearance and helps eliminate rubbing concerns with the larger tire setup.
The build also added black side steps, a tonneau cover and a Wolfbox G900 Pro touchscreen rearview mirror. In its latest round of upgrades, the Tacoma gains a more aggressive appearance and expanded lighting capability. A Diode Dynamics SS40 light bar is mounted to a Prinsu Pro roof rack, enhancing visibility and reinforcing the truck’s off-road persona.
The most eye-catching addition is a Seibon Carbon TS carbon fiber hood, giving the midsize pickup a sharper, performance-inspired edge. Complementing the hood are Alpharex Nova headlights and multiple amber and white LED elements integrated into the front fascia.
The result is a once-modest SR5 that now visually rivals higher-end trims such as the Limited, Trailhunter and TRD Pro, underscoring the Tacoma’s adaptability in both factory and customized form.
