A heavily modified 2000 AM General Hummer Open Top is drawing interest ahead of its auction conclusion, showcasing a combination of military-inspired capability and extensive aftermarket upgrades designed to enhance both performance and utility.
Finished in bronze with a tan and black interior, the Hummer represents a significantly reworked example of AM General’s civilian off-road icon. Built from the same foundation that made the military Humvee successful, the civilian Hummer retained many of the original vehicle’s defining features, including portal axles, a central tire inflation system and a design engineered to tackle challenging terrain. Production of the civilian Hummer ran from 1992 through 2006, and the model was never directly replaced.
This particular vehicle has undergone a substantial mechanical transformation. The factory-installed 6.5-liter turbodiesel V8 and four-speed automatic transmission have been replaced with a 6.6-liter LBZ Duramax turbodiesel V8 paired with an Allison six-speed automatic transmission. Power is sent to all four wheels through the Hummer’s four-wheel-drive system, providing a modernized drivetrain intended to improve both performance and drivability.
The modifications extend well beyond the engine bay. Suspension upgrades include an adjustable air suspension system designed to provide additional versatility across varying terrain. The truck also features Wilwood outboard brakes and rides on 20-inch Black Rhino wheels. Underbody protection bars have been added, while an aftermarket exhaust system further complements the Duramax powerplant.

JL Audio subwoofers have also been installed, providing a significant upgrade over the vehicle’s original audio setup. Air conditioning remains among the factory amenities.
The seller reports that maintenance completed in 2023 included replacement of the alternator, drive belt and fuel filter housing, along with an oil and filter change and installation of a heater element delete kit. Additional work reportedly included replacement of the transmission wiring harness and an air-conditioning line, followed by a recharge of the climate-control system.
The vehicle shows approximately 74,100 miles, though the accompanying vehicle history report notes a mileage inconsistency recorded in December 2021 that may have resulted from a clerical error. The report also indicates no accidents in the Hummer’s history.
Represented by the seller on behalf of the current owner, who reportedly purchased the vehicle in May 2023 and added approximately 10,000 miles, the Hummer is offered with one key, spare wheels and an additional soft top.
While some cosmetic wear is present, including minor chips, scratches, seat wear and corrosion on underside components, the extensively upgraded Hummer stands out as a distinctive blend of military-derived engineering and modern diesel-powered performance.
