A 1985 Ford Mustang LX Special Service Package, originally developed for law enforcement use, has resurfaced on the collector market with a blend of period-correct equipment and later performance upgrades. The notchback model is currently listed on Bring a Trailer, offering enthusiasts another opportunity to acquire a piece of Ford’s police vehicle history.

The Mustang SSP program was created to provide police departments with a lightweight, high-performance alternative to traditional patrol cars. This example retains many of the defining features associated with its original purpose, including a driver-side spotlight and grille-mounted red and blue lights. Additional equipment such as a police scanner and a siren control unit further reinforce its law enforcement roots.
While the car’s exterior maintains its distinctive presence, its mechanical setup has been significantly enhanced. In 2003, the original engine was replaced with a Roush 347 cubic-inch V8 crate engine, delivering increased power over the factory configuration. The engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission and a performance-oriented clutch system, offering a more engaging driving experience.
Supporting modifications include electronic fuel injection, upgraded exhaust headers, and an MSD tachometer adapter. Together, these components contribute to improved performance and reliability while maintaining the car’s overall character. The vehicle also features four-wheel disc brakes, providing enhanced stopping power compared to earlier setups.

Inside, the cabin has been updated with replacement gray cloth upholstery while retaining a utilitarian layout. A JVC CD stereo adds a modern touch, complementing the specialized radio equipment already in place. The combination of original police hardware and later additions creates a unique interior that reflects both its past and present.
The car was acquired by its current owner earlier last year through the same auction platform and is now being offered again through dealer consignment. Accompanying documentation includes a Deluxe Marti report and service records, supporting its provenance and history.
As interest in Fox-body Mustangs continues to grow, examples like this SSP model stand out for their unique role in automotive and law enforcement history, combining purpose-built design with enthusiast-focused performance upgrades. See it here.
