If you become the President of the United States one day, you’ll quickly learn that the Secret Service won’t allow you to drive on public highways while in office. The huge security risk driving presents means that you’ll spend your time being chauffeured around in a presidential limo. BORING!

Despite the mandatory need to become the world’s most powerful backseat driver, there’s nothing in the presidential rulebook that says you can’t privately own cars. Today is Presidents Day in the USA, and to celebrate we’ve gathered the top 10 cars owned by presidents.

Donald Trump - Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren

Being exceedingly wealthy before becoming president will certainly help with building an impressive garage. The 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, had a net worth of $3.1 billion in 2015 according to Forbes, more than enough for a few toys.

Trump has been known to splash out on cars, but one of his best purchases was a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. The super GT was forged from a collaboration between Mercedes and McLaren, with both sharing development and the car being launched in 2003.

Its supercharged 5.4-liter engine gave it a top speed of 208mph.

Barack Obama - 2005 Chrysler 300C

Before Barrack Obama became the first African-American U.S. president, he owned a Chrysler 300C. The American sedan packed a 5.7L V8 engine under the hood and was finished in an understated shade of grey.

Obama decided to switch the Chrysler for a more eco-friendly Ford Escape Hybrid before running for office. Back in 2012, someone failed to sell the 22,000-mile 300C for $1,000,000.

George W. Bush - Ford F-150 King Ranch

George W. Bush grew up in Texas, and spent a lot of time on the family ranch, and so a it makes sense to see him behind the wheel of a truck. The Ford F-150 is good enough to be America’s best seller, and so it was good enough for Mr. Bush.

The 43rd president's pick of the range was the King Ranch model that came with a 5.4L V8 engine, plush interior, and plenty of chrome. This pickup was sold at a 2013 Barrett-Jackson auction for $300,000.

Ronald Reagan - 1962 Jeep CJ-6

Ronald Reagan wasn’t shy of a penny or two, but he loved his beaten-up Willys CJ-6, which he would regularly drive on his ranch.

First Lady Nancy Reagan reportedly hated the tatty Jeep, and so bought her husband a CJ-8 Golden Eagle. However, Reagan just couldn’t let go of his beloved CJ-6 so kept it alongside the newer model.

Interestingly, Reagan also had a Subaru Brat that was kept a secret in fear of it looking unpatriotic.

Richard Nixon - 1950 Oldsmobile 98

Nixon famously used his Oldsmobile as a political tool in a bid to prove his trustworthiness. While detailing his finances publicly, he made note the 1950 Oldsmobile 98 in his ‘Checkers’ speech.

The car in question featured the iconic 5.0L Rocket V8 engine.

Geral R Ford - 1969 Ford Mustang

Ford by name, Ford by nature. Back in his youth, Gerald R. Ford indulged in one of America’s most iconic cars. His 1969 Mustang Fastback was as aspirational as the future president, who went into politics after playing football for Michigan in college.

Bill Clinton - 1967 Ford Mustang Convertible

Unlike Ford, Clinton bought his Mustang as a classic to enjoy on sunny days. The former president had to give up his pride and joy upon securing the top job in the White House, something he openly remarked as being difficult.

The car currently resides in The Museum of Automobiles in Arkansas.

John F. Kennedy - Ford Thunderbird

JFK absolutely loved the Ford Thunderbird so much, that not only did he own one, but requested that around 24 examples of the model be present in his inauguration parade. The Kennedys knew the value of public image, and so the modern, stylish, and desirable T-Birds were an obvious choice.

William Taft - Baker Electric

After ordering the White House stables be converted into a garage for modern cars, President Taft procured a Baker Electric, making him the first president with a car. He still remains the only known president who had an all-electric car.

Lyndon B Johnson - Amphicar

Undoubtedly the most fascinating and unusual car on this list, President Johnson owned an Amphicar. Capable of traversing both land and sea, the amphibious car was a product of West Germany.

Built from 1960-'65, Amphicars weren’t the sales success its creators had hoped with just 3878 produced in total. Today they are highly collectable curiosities.
