Celebrate The Indy 500 Home With This Pontiac Trans Am Turbo Pace Car

The Indy 500 might be just days away, but you could become the ultimate fan with this Pace Car.

This weekend marks the 2019 installment of the famous Indy 500. All eyes will be on the drivers (well, not Fernando Alonso) to see who can claim victory at The Brickyard. How about getting a piece of Indy action for yourself with this 1980 Pontiac Trans Am Turbo pace car?

Currently listed for auction with Driveway Deals is a rare Trans Am Turbo, complete with its original pace car livery. It is one of 5,700 produced and one of just 100 actually used as a festival car at the Indy 500 on May 25, 1980.

It looks to be in great condition with the original paintwork all present and correct. The enlarged ‘screaming chicken’ on the hood and charcoal effect is unique to these pace cars, and certainly separates it from the many other Trans Ams out there. Red decals detail the car and serve to highlight the enhanced bodywork for this model year.

The interior also looks to be in fine health, with its design mimicking the color scheme of the exterior. Touches such as milled aluminum dashboard trim and a three-spoke sports steering wheel give this car a real sense of occasion. The fabric and leather seats have stood the test of time, as has the immaculate embroidery on the door cards. An added bonus is that this model features removable T-top roof panels to enjoy a bit of sunshine.

Under the hood is a turbocharged 4.9-liter 301 cubic inch V8 engine. It is capable of producing 201hp with boost being limited to 9 PSI to prevent damage to the engine. Interestingly, the Pontiac Trans Am Turbo is said to be one of the least modified pace cars to serve the Indy 500. This was actually the first time the Trans Am had been selected for the event, but it went on to serve as the pace car for NASCAR through 1980.

This 80,000-mile Trans Am has an estimate of $25,000 - $38,000 and is certainly a collectable.
