Somebody Needs To Preserve This 1984 Pontiac Fiero Indy Pace Car Edition

This was an innovative moment in American car history.

While the Pontiac brand might be long gone, its influence on the automotive landscape certainly lives on. This 1984 Pontiac Fiero Indy Pace Car Edition is a perfect example. It pushed American cars in a more exotic direction at a time when many thought American performance cars were all but dead. This particular example is in top condition, making it worthy of displaying in a museum or just about any car show.

At first glance, you’ll be surprised at how this Fiero glistens in any light. The white paint job has been meticulously preserved and polished to near perfection. It shows every exotic angle and curve on this daring car which blew people’s minds when the Fiero line debuted. The fact the car featured plastic body panels was also quite innovative. All trim and the factory wheels on this car are also immaculate, providing a clear portrayal of what this car looked like when it rolled of the factory line.

More Pontiacs

Tucked behind the driver and passenger seats is a 150.8ci engine which produces 92-horsepower and 134 lb.-ft. of torque. This particular model has the manual four-speed transmission, which sends power to the rear wheels. While not a monstrous performance machine, the Fiero handles exceptionally well and is quite entertaining to drive.

There were a mere 2,000 1984 Fiero Indy Pace Car Editions made by Pontiac, and quite a few of them haven’t survived. Even more impressive, about an eighth of those made had the manual transmission, so this is a pretty rare set of wheels. The Fiera was innovative for its time because virtually no American car had been made with a mid-engine layout. This was a daring project from GM, and the production run for the Fiero only lasted 5 years. Someone needs to preserve this historically-important American classic so future generations can appreciate what it represents.
