Since he was only 52 years old, television and movie icon Luke Perry's passing was a total shock to the system this year. He swooned many 80s and 90s teens on Beverly Hills 90210, right on the cusp of the show's reboot. He was also experiencing a fame comeback on the CW show, Riverdale, when he suffered a massive ischemic stroke, then a second stroke that prompted the hard decision to remove him from life support in February.

Often compared to James Dean, he, like Dean, was often associated with the Porsche. However, his relationship with the moniker, and the car itself, may not have been what you’d think. Here are five things that might surprise you about Luke Perry and his Beverly Hills 90210 Porsche.

Perry Didn’t Understand The James Dean Comparison

Speaking of James Dean, Luke Perry was not as accepting of the comparison as the rest of us. He was quoted in saying:

“I’m not James Dean. And no one else is, either,” and “At one point or another, everybody gets called ‘the new James Dean.’” Which speaks to his humble nature, because most would agree that he’s our generation’s James Dean, whether he wanted the title, or not.

He Didn’t Actually Like His Character’s Porsche

Despite his character’s ownership of the Porsche, Luke Perry didn’t exactly seem to be a fan of the cars, Perry told People, “Porsches are glorified Volkswagens, man,” so unless he really like Volkswagens, he didn’t seem all that impressed with the car. He also added "I climb over Porsches in my Blazer.”

It Wasn’t A True Speedster

The dashboard and steering wheel are not those of a real Speedster, cluing off to the fact that this Porsche is not a true Speedster, but was converted as such for production. 

The Porsche Wasn’t The Only Cool Car In The Show

Joining the Porsche on the show was a 1965 Ford Mustang, and 1991 Corvette C4, amongst many others. We wonder if he was any fonder of those cars than he was of the Porsche. 

Where Is The Porsche Now?

The Porsche was suspended from the ceiling in the Myrtle Beach Planet Hollywood.  Now that Planet Hollywood in question is shut down, it seems the Porsche is privately owned, and was listed for sale a while back for he engine, exhaust, and gas tank have been removed from the car.
